Lonly Luna

Lonely Luna   (text for a picture book)

Luna didn’t know why she was in a cage. She didn’t use to live in a cage.

She used to have a family and a house. Something happened, but Luna didn’t know what.

Luna was sad and lonely.

All the people that walked by her cage looked in at her and then went on the see the silly kittens further down the row.

Most of the kittens were being adopted right away.

Even some of the older cats were going to a new home.

But not Luna: she was too big and too old for anyone to want to take home.

Luna sighed and put her head on her paws.

She closed her eyes and dreamed of having a forever home that she would never have to leave.

She dreamed of a soft warm bed and a lot of toys. And no cages.

Luna woke up with a start!

There was a family in front of her cage, looking at her.

Luna sighed and lowered her head again, the family would move on just like everyone else did.

But they didn’t!

Mom said, “Oh, isn’t she beautiful?”

Kate said, “Yes she is!”

Luna looked over her shoulder, sure there was another cat in the cage with her. Certainly they couldn’t be talking about her.

Nope, no other cat.

Luna stared at the family.

Then they walked off!!!

Luna knew it! It was too much to hope for.

Then the family was back, this time with a volunteer, and a big box with holes.

Mom signed some papers, and said: “There, that should do it.”

Mom and Kate looked in the cage and said: “Come on pretty girl, you are going home with us!”

The volunteer unlocked Luna’s cage and took her out.

Luna really was a BIG cat, she barely fit into the BIG box with holes!

Luna stood still in the box. Another cage?? No, she remembered that this was the going-home box that only cats who were adopted got to go in.

“ADOPTED??? I am being ADOPTED????”

Luna was so happy! She was going to a forever home!

Now she wouldn’t be lonely anymore.
